Xbox Repair in Charleston, WV: No Picture, HDMI Problems, Overheating and Shutdowns

There’s nothing quite like sitting down to play and getting a black screen instead. Or getting halfway through a game before your Xbox shuts itself off. Console problems are frustrating, but a lot of them come down to a few common causes.

At Computers Plus, we repair Xbox and PlayStation consoles right here in Charleston. Here’s a look at the Xbox problems we see most, what you can check at home first, and what to expect when you bring it in.

Problem 1: The Xbox turns on, but there’s no picture

This is one of the most common issues we see. The console powers on, you might hear it or see the light, but the TV says “no signal.”

Try these at home first:

  • Check the TV input. Make sure the TV is set to the HDMI input the Xbox is plugged into.
  • Try a different HDMI cable. Cables wear out, especially if they’ve been bent, stepped on or pulled.
  • Try a different HDMI port on the TV, or a different TV altogether.
  • Unplug everything between the console and the TV, like a sound bar or switch, and connect the Xbox directly.

When it’s probably the console’s HDMI port: If none of that helps, take a careful look at the HDMI port on the back of the Xbox (with the power off and unplugged). A port that’s loose, bent, pushed in, or doesn’t grip the cable firmly is a common reason for no picture. That often happens when a console gets moved or pulled with the cable still attached, or the cable gets yanked or tripped over.

What we do: We replace damaged Xbox HDMI ports. Our pricing page lists Xbox HDMI port replacement at $199. Prices are subject to change, and final pricing is determined after diagnosis.

Problem 2: Running hot, loud fans or surprise shutdowns

Consoles work hard, and they need airflow to stay cool. Over time, dust builds up inside, and the thermal compound that helps move heat away from the processor can dry out. The result can be a console that runs loud, feels hot, or shuts down during play.

Try these at home first:

  • Give it room to breathe. Don’t box it into a tight cabinet or set things on top of it. Keep the vents clear.
  • Keep it off carpet and away from heat, like a heater vent or a sunny window.
  • Gently clean the outside vents with a dry, soft brush. Don’t stick anything inside the console, and don’t open it up yourself.

What we do: Our thermal service includes internal dust cleaning, fresh thermal compound application and a thermal performance inspection. It’s listed on our pricing page as an add-on for Xbox or PlayStation for $40. If your console is shutting down or overheating, bring it in and we’ll diagnose what’s going on before recommending anything.

Problem 3: It won’t power on at all

If your Xbox shows no lights and makes no sound, start simple: try a different outlet, make sure the power cable is firmly seated on both ends, and if you have a surge protector or power strip, plug the console straight into the wall. If it’s still dead, bring it in. Console power problems can have several causes, and we’ll diagnose it and quote the repair before doing any work.

We service the Xbox One X, Xbox One S, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, including HDMI port replacement and thermal service.
